So today marks the first day that I have written in the blog in over two months…. I really want to try and write more often because my memory is wack and only the written will allow me to remember the small joys that i recieve from this program. In the following paragraphs I am going to attempt to sum up the last few months adventures from memory. Here we go…..

Barcelona was the last place that I Spoke about in this blog…. The next place I went to was Lisbon, Portugal with my buddy Gary. He has a friend there that was totally cool and she let us crash at her pad for three days. In Lisbon we cruised around the town the first day and took in the classic flavor of the city. To be honest it seamed as though the citizens of Lisbon do not put much empashis on maintaining their buildings. They looked a bit run down but it did give the city a certain character that I havent found with other cities. We also visited a 9th Century Moorish Castles in  Sintra. Gary and I took and train ride north in search of this amazing piece of history. From the town all you have to do is look up and you can see this magistic Fortress looming over the city. As soon as we saw it we knew we had to climb to the highest point on the castle.  So we embarked on our mission and began our accent…. through private gardens, backyards, alleys, and over walls we summited the beast. Only to later find that there was a bus that would take you up for less that 2 Euros. hahaha oh well it was a good experience. The View was simply amazing! It had been cloudy all day and as we reached the highest point of the castle the sun broke through the clouds as it sank into the horizon and slowly we watched the entire valley be illuminated through a thin layer of fog. That was probably the most beautiful sights i have ever seen. Shortly after we decended in a similar fashion as our accent as we were to impatient to wait for the bus.
We also visited a small beach town name Cais Case, I totally Jacked up the spelling there, but that place was pretty cool. We went to some really beautiful spots as well. Overall, Lisbon was a great city. The Nightlife was fun eventhough we didnt go to the night clubs. Though we did get rolled by the Portugese undercover police. I blame that on Gary but that is a story for another time. hahahaha. I really enjoyed my time there, I do believe that i will be headed back someday.

Next I think I went to Rome with Gary. That place was also very cool. The nightlife was dismal but the history of course was amazing. Being able to walk around in the Colisem is an amazing experience in its self. There are so many ruins from this great civilization that it becomes difficult to appreciate the sights after a few hours of seeing them. We met a really cool girl there that had been traveling for quite sometime and she was able to come with us and give us a tour. She was super nice and was able to handle the crude and sometimes racy humor that Gary and I like to employ ahaha. She was down, her friend candy later joined us and we went to dinner. One of the best dinners I have probably had. We simply walked into an italian Mom and Pop shop resturant and asked out waiter to bring us out whatever he thought was most authentic italian food. From then on it was game on .   Plate after plate after plate of delicious fruiits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, wines, and pasta. It was a private feast just for us.

The we went to Morocco. That place was interesting. It sorta reminded me of T.J. Lots of Haggling, lots of pressure to buy.  I honestly felt like a lamb sent to the slaughter. It wasnt much of a vacation because eventhough things were affordable I couldn’t help but feel i was being taken for a ride. I guess it felt as though there was a lack of Geniue intentions there. Noboady helped for free. I can understand that people need money, but I guess coming from the world view that i Possess it just struck me the wrong way. What I will say is that they are amazing craftsman. They can do things with leather and ceramics that will blow your mind. What more is that most of the people selling on the streets are well versed in the tongues of other nations. I met a guy that could speak 6 Languages and he learned all of them living on the streets. I was simply amazed. I am giong to give Morocco another shot in the near future. I wanna like it, I just need to have a good experience.

Anyway that sums up more or less the big trips that i have taken. Frankly, Im super tired of trying to remember this stuff. I have pictures to fill in the rest. Basically, I view this entry as a jumpstart for the next seven months to come for all things Spain.

Wow its been a crazy past week…. So much happens in so little time here. I cant wait for nothing major to happen and I gain some sense of normalcy. I started off my week in good spirits, I had decided I wasnt happy living in Getafe with Florencia even though she was a doll. I didn’t like the apartment. It was really expensive for what it was and it was really far away from my new friends and possible social opportunities. Basically it was cramping my style big time. I honestly over estimated my ability to adapt in a foriegn county and I completely underestimated my standard of living. I am definitely spoiled by the type of life style i maintained in Costa Mesa. It was a rude awakeing to find out I didn’t want to live that slowly and that far away from friends. Looking back now I think I could of stuck it out if i had to… but bottom line is I didn’t. That little venture cost me a deposit because I decided to “marchar” ahaha. But whatever you live and you learn. Maria the land lady was kind of a beezy and Kristian was a sweet heart but i do feel robbed that they didn’t give me back my deposit.

Anyway, that was monday…. for the next few days I was looking for a place to stay in Madrid. All the while I had the longest work orientation i have ever had…10 Hours the first day and 5 the next. BA! It was bascially a stretched out introduction into what we could expect from the program and tips and tricks for getting around the city. Most of the stuff we already knew or was something we could easily findout during our experience. So needless to say ….. we were all bored.. During that people were making friends and striking up converstation with one another…. I on the other hand didnt. I guess i didn’t see value in befriending someone that I probably wont see again. Or maybe i was just being a shy. Whatever the case may be it doesn’t matter… Ill make friends. So thats the orientation…

So then came the house hunt… I actually found a pretty cool place… there is a ton of natural light, Which i didn’t know was so important to me until i lost it, and I am living with a nice family… They are sorta shy right now… seeing as how they dont speak a lick of English. Im excited to practice my spanish with them when i can… I really enjoy trying to talk to them. I don’t get those looks of judgement that people back home give me when I don’t speak perfect spanish. I believe I will be well suited here and Im pretty sure they will like  me. The cool thing is the son is learning spanish at school… Im thinking I might be able trade some lessons for some food. well see how open to that they are in the coming future

So I went to barcelona… I really like the city… I didn’t like all of my experience there but overall it was worth the money I paid the energy I spent. I met some cool people and Got to hang with my friend Rose. I don’t know why we didn’t get together on saturday night but its all good. I slammed home sunday not feeling great and really tired. Made it back home and went to sleep after talking to the GF and my Parents. Woke up the next morning and had my first day of school

I was a bit nervous but mostly cause i didn’t want to be late to class as i didnt know how far it was but it was good. They fed me breakfast!!!!! For Free!!!! then we did some arts and crafts and basically just farted around. I think this job is going to be cake. Im going to be a p.e. teacher how sick is that. Basically once again my physique and athletisicim has pigeon holed me into a role of little responsibility. So good haha. Anyway more about that later. its time for me to catch the metro for some rugby. Late.

My first week in Spain

Posted: September 22, 2011 in Uncategorized

So I am sitting in my closet sized room on my seventh night in Spain. I am living in Getafe which is town just south of the city. The apartment is old and run down, the walls are paper thin, my upstairs neighbors are going at like rabbits and my room smells a bit like old fish. On the brightside i have somewhere to live, my neighbors only went for 2 min and God invented Frebreeze. haha. I was in the Way Hostel in Tirso de Molina for five days then spent one night No Name Hostel just up the street from the Way. The Hostel was a cool experience and intially I wanted to stay there from atleast two weeks. In order to meet people and hang out and stuff. Well that idea was short lived considering hostel living kinda sucks long term. But the people were cool and I had fun. We are even planning a road trip to Munich with some of the people I met there. Hopefully that happens and we can go. That would be uber exciting.

Tommorrow I get to start to be a tourist a bit. It was hard to really enjoy the city when I was so preoccupied with finding a place to live.  So tomorrow i am taking the Renfe back up to the city at Sol and Im going to take the city walking tour. They take you to all the historically significant places in Madrid and get this…. Its free…. You can tip the guide if you want… Well see. haha. So that will be super cool. Ill Probably hang around up there after that and see if anyone wants to meet up for a beer and Tapas. For those of you that dont know what Tapas are they are basically snacks. You sit down at a resturant and order a drink and they just bring you some random piece of food to much on with your drink. Tonight it was fried sardines and this bread stuff with mushrooms and chesse. They best part of the tapas are that they are free… What What !! So those are pretty Awesome.

After a week here I am starting to get the hang of things. I havent been able to use too much spainish considering I have been surrounded by english speakers this whole time. Even my Korea roomie speaks really good english. I could of lived in a room smaller than this on the other side of town with two spanish guys but the room was even smaller than mine now and it didn’t have sheets or anything. But whatever Im going to have to use it eventuallly. So I am not to worried about my language aquisition right now.

To sum up the week
I learned the train system
Met some cool People
Learned what tapas are
Found my place to live
Learning how to make the most of this place… Via Travel
